iPhone: The Missing Manual

iPhone: The Missing Manual

Book Description:
As you’d expect of Apple, the iPhone is gorgeous. iPhone: The Missing Manual is a book as breathtaking as its subject. Teeming with high-quality color graphics, each custom designed page helps you accomplish specific tasks — everything from Web browsing to watching videos. Written by New York Times columnist and Missing Manual series creator David Pogue, this book shows you how to get the most out of your new Apple iPhone.

The name iPhone may be doing Apple a disservice. This machine is so packed with possibilities that the cellphone may actually be the least interesting part. The iPhone is at least three products merged into one: a phone, a wide-screen iPod and a wireless, touch-screen Internet communicator. The iPhone’s beauty alone may be enough for you to dig for your credit cards, but its Mac OS X-based software makes it not so much a smartphone as something out of the film “Minority Report.”
The real magic, however, awaits when you browse the Web. You get to see the entire Web page on the iPhone’s screen. All of this is cooked up with Apple’s traditional secret sauce of simplicity, intelligence and whimsy.
Written by New York Times columnist and Missing Manual series creator David Pogue, iPhone: The Missing Manual shows you everything they need to know to get the most out of your new Apple iPhone. Full of humor, tips, tricks, and surprises, this book teaches you how to extend iPhone’s usefulness by exploiting its links to the Web as well as its connection to Macs or PCs; how to save money using Internet-based messages instead of phone calls; and how to fill the iPhone with TV shows and DVDs for free.

About the Author:
David Pogue is the personal-technology columnist for the New York Times, a contributor to CBS Sunday Morning, a frequent guest on NPR’s Morning Edition, and a Discovery Channel series host. As the creator and primary author of the objective and entertaining Missing Manual computer book series, David is also one of the world’s bestselling how-to authors. Titles in the series include Mac OS X, Vista, Windows XP, iPod, Microsoft Office, iPhoto, Dreamweaver, the Internet, iMovie, and many others.

Unix File Systems

Unix File Systems

One of the first things you will notice when moving from a Windows machine to a Unix machine is that the data is laid out differently. You will notice that the directory separator is leaning the opposite direction. Windows uses the back slash and Unix uses the forward slash. Also, Windows assigns each disk and partition a letter. The floppy disk is the “A:” drive, the hard disk is the “C:” drive, and other letters are assigned as you partition or add storage devices.

Building Websites with Joomla!

This book is a fast paced tutorial to creating a website using Joomla!. If you’ve never used Joomla!, or even any web content management system before, then this book will walk you through each step in a friendly and accessible way. From installation, to initial set up and content entry and then on to customization for your own look and feel, this book will get you to a stable and working Joomla! based web site fast. You don’t have to be an experienced web developer or designer to get a great looking site with a full set of functions using this book and Joomla! This book will guide through every step.

Joomla! is a fully featured web content management system and was created in Summer 2005 as a fork from the hugely popular Mambo CMS with many of the original Mambo developers moving their efforts to Joomla! While still in its first release, it is supported by an active and well organized open source development team and community. Joomla! is both easy to use at the entry level for creating basic websites, whilst having the power and flexibility to support complex web applications. Joomla! implements the core requirements of a full-featured CMS. It has a powerful and extensible templating system with the ability to upload and manage many different data types. User access control, content approval, rich administrative control, and content display scheduling are all built-in. New features and extensions are constantly added to the core system, with many more being available and supported by the community.

The book begins by introducing Joomla! and concepts behind content management. Then the installation of Joomla!, and its supporting software [Apache/MySQL/PHP] is covered clearly and simply. Once you have the installation up and running, we then take a tour of Joomla! as it appears out of the box, to familiarize ourselves with how it works and what is what. As you take the tour, your own ideas for what you need in your new website begin to crystallize around what you can see Joomla! is capable of. We then build our web application, using only the features of Joomla! we really need. Once we have a base version of our site up, we then learn how to change its appearance and feature set to suit our particular requirements, including bringing it into line with an established corporate identity. At the end of the book we show how you can add your own extensions to Joomla!.

This book focuses on taking you through the essential tasks to create a Joomla! site as fast as possible. These essential tasks are explained clearly, with well structured step-by-step instructions. The book does not aim to cover every feature of Joomla! nor is it a comprehensive guide to extending Joomla!. Almost everything in the book is accomplished without recourse to the underlying PHP code in which Joomla! is written. The book is very readable and the author has a particularly chatty and engaging writing style.

Foundation Website Creation with CSS, XHTML, and JavaScript (c) by
friends of ED

The type of the release is: eBook
In the PDF format with ISBN: 1430209917 and Pub Date: July 21, 2008
The size of the release is: 03 disks x 2.88mb
And released on: 08/21/2008

This book covers the entire process of building a website. This process
involves much more than just technical knowledge, and this book provides
you with all the information you'll need to understand the concepts
behind designing and developing for the Web, as well as the best means
to deliver professional, best-practice-based results. There is far more
to building a successful website than knowing a little Hypertext Markup
Language (HTML). The process starts long before any coding takes place,
and this book introduces you to the agile development process,
explaining why this method makes so much sense for web projects and how
best to implement it. Planning is vital, so you'll also learn how to use
techniques such as brainstorming, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes to
get your project off to the best possible start and help ensure smooth
progress as it develops. An understanding of correct, semantic markup is
essential to any web professional, so this book explains how XHTML
should be used to structure content so that the markup adheres to
current web standards. You'll learn about the wide range of HTML
elements available to you, and you'll learn how and when to use them
through building example web pages. Without creative use of Cascading
Style Sheets (CSS), websites would all look largely the same. CSS gives
you the ability to set your website apart from the rest while
maintaining the integrity of your markup. You'll learn how CSS works and
how to apply styles to your pages, enabling you to realize your design
ideas in the browser. JavaScript can be used to make your website easier
and more interesting to use. This book provides information on
appropriate uses of this technology and introduces the concepts of
programming using it. You'll also see how JavaScript works as part of
the much-hyped technique Ajax and in turn where Ajax fits into the wider
Web 2.0 picture. While a website is being built, it needs to be tested
across multiple browsers and platforms to ensure that the site works for
all users, regardless of ability or disability, and the book explains
how best to do these tasks. Then, it discusses the process of launching
and maintaining the site so that it will continue to work for all its
users throughout its life-cycle. The book concludes by covering
server-side technologies, acting as a guide to the different options
available and explaining differences between available products. With
insights from renowned experts such as Jason Fried of 37signals, Daniel
Burka of Digg and Pownce, and Chris Messina of Citizen Agency,
Foundation Website Creation provides invaluable information applicable
to every web project, regardless of size, scope, or budget.
In this book you'll
- See how the Web has developed and the role web standards play
- Learn how to plan and manage the building of a website
- Learn how to separate content from presentation with HTML and CSS
- See how JavaScript can be used to enhance your website
- Learn how best to test, launch, and maintain a website

Design Engineering- A Manual for Enhanced Creativity

Design Engineering- A Manual for Enhanced Creativity

Description:
As with any art, science, or discipline, natural talent is only part of the equation. Consistent success stems from honing your skills, cultivating good techniques, and hard work. Design engineering, a field often considered an intuitive process not amenable to scientific investigation, is no exception. Providing descriptive theory, broad context, and practical examples, Design Engineering: A Manual for Enhanced Creativity explores how to quantify
creativity, codify inspiration, and document a process seemingly based solely on intuition. The authors discuss how to clarify the design task, conceptualize candidate solutions, and search for alternatives.

They delineate how these phases fit into an industrial context, including engineering product development, and what to consider during design engineering to satisfy all customers. The book discusses activities and methods for performing
engineering design work in a rational, reviewable, and documented way, increasing the likelihood of finding an optimal solution. The presentation covers substantiated use of intuition and opportunism as an integral part of rational, systematic, and methodical designing. It examines the influence of other topics on the work, such as psychology, computers, teamwork, application of methods, and education. The authors recommend that results from these less systematic activities be brought into the rational and systematic framework to document the results. Based on the authors’ extensive industrial experience, the book elucidates a coherent body of knowledge of design engineering. The book clearly details an easily applicable theory that not only gives you solid design tools, but can also be adapted to any existing design situation.

Designing and Engineering Time: The Psychology of Time Perception in Software

Designing and Engineering Time: The Psychology of Time Perception in Software

One hidden factor powerfully influences the way users react to your software, hardware, User Interfaces (UI), or web applications: how those systems utilize users’ time. Now, drawing on the nearly 40 years of human computer interaction research–including his own pioneering work–Dr. Steven Seow presents state-of-the-art best practices for reflecting users’ subjective perceptions of time in your applications and hardware.

Seow begins by introducing a simple model that explains how users perceive and expend time as they interact with technology. He offers specific guidance and recommendations related to several key aspects of time and timing–including user tolerance, system responsiveness, progress indicators, completion time estimates, and more. Finally, he brings together proven techniques for impacting users’ perception of time drawn from multiple disciplines and industries, ranging from psychology to ******, animal research to entertainment.

• Discover how time and timing powerfully impact user perception, emotions, and behavior
• Systematically make your applications more considerate of users’ time
• Avoid common mistakes that consistently frustrate or infuriate users
• Manage user perceptions and tolerance, and build systems that are perceived as faster
• Optimize “flow” to make users feel more productive, empowered, and creative
• Make reasonable and informed tradeoffs that maximize limited development resources

Enterprise JavaBeans, 3rd Edition

ImageShack

Product Description
Enterprise JavaBeans was recently voted “Best Java Book” by the editors and readers of Java Developer’s Journal. Readers of JavaPro named it the “Best Java Book for Experts.” And Amazon.com included it in the Top Computer Books for 2000. Now the best only gets better! In the new 3rd edition, Enterprise JavaBeans has been completely revised and updated with a thorough introduction to the new 2.0 version of the EJB specification. Significantly different from the earlier version, the 2.0 specification introduces three dramatic improvements: A completely new version of container-managed persistence; local interfaces; and a totally new kind of bean called the “message driven bean.”

The new version of container-managed persistence (CMP) beans in 2.0 is more portable and robust than in the older 1.1 version. Most significant is the introduction of the relationship fields, which allow entity beans to declare relationships with each other as natural references. In order to make this huge leap in component relationships possible, EJB 2.0 had to redesign how entity beans are defined and interact. Our new 3rd edition examines this critical CMP model in detail.

Local interfaces are thoroughly discussed as well. Local interfaces allow beans that are co-located to interact without the overhead of remote method calls. This improves the performance of beans considerably and complements the CMP relationship fields.

Message driven beans are a new kind of enterprise bean based on asynchronous messaging and the Java Message service (JMS). Instead of responding to Java RMI calls, message driven beans process JMS messages sent by messaging clients. An entire chapter is devoted to message-driven beans and how to use them effectively.

In addition, the 3rd edition contains an architecture overview, information on resource management and primary services, design strategies, and XML deployment descriptors.

Firewalls for Dummies, Second Edition

ImageShack

Product Description
What an amazing world we live in! Almost anything you can imagine can be researched, compared, admired, studied, and in many cases, bought, with the click of a mouse. The Internet has changed our lives, putting a world of opportunity before us. Unfortunately, it has also put a world of opportunity into the hands of those whose motives are less than honorable. A firewall, a piece of software or hardware that erects a barrier between your computer and those who might like to invade it, is one solution.

If you’ve been using the Internet for any length of time, you’ve probably received some unsavory and unsolicited e-mail. If you run a business, you may be worried about the security of your data and your customers’ privacy. At home, you want to protect your personal information from identity thieves and other shady characters. Firewalls For Dummies® will give you the lowdown on firewalls, then guide you through choosing, installing, and configuring one for your personal or bus iness network.

Firewalls For Dummies® helps you understand what firewalls are, how they operate on different types of networks, what they can and can’t do, and how to pick a good one (it’s easier than identifying that perfect melon in the supermarket.) You’ll find out about

* Developing security policies
* Establishing rules for simple protocols
* Detecting and responding to system intrusions
* Setting up firewalls for SOHO or personal use
* Creating demilitarized zones
* Using Windows or Linux as a firewall
* Configuring ZoneAlarm, BlackICE, and Norton personal firewalls
* Installing and using ISA server and FireWall-1

With the handy tips and hints this book provides, you’ll find that firewalls are nothing to fear – that is, unless you’re a cyber-crook! You’ll soon be able to keep your data safer, protect your family’s privacy, and probably sleep better, too.

UNIX Fault Management: A Guide for System Administrators

ImageShack

Book Info
Designed to help you maximize system integrity and availability on any Unix system-including clusters, monitor systems, disks, networks applications, and databases, with tips for recovery and prevention. Provides quick reference diagnostics and recovery section for systems operators. Softcover. DLC: UNIX (Computer file).

From the Inside Flap
Preface

This book is intended for system administrators and operators who are responsible for maintaining the integrity and availability of mission-critical UNIX systems. The book provides a description of the fault monitoring tools and techniques available for UNIX servers, including systems that are configured as high availability clusters.

This book can therefore be a handy quick reference for an operator trying to troubleshoot a problem in the customer environment, by pointing out where to find key diagnostic messages and describing how to take recovery actions.

A system administrator responsible for the initial configuration and administration of UNIX systems will also find this book useful because it describes the procedures to follow to set up the appropriate levels of system monitoring. The product descriptions can also help in making purchasing decisions as the customer determines the appropriate amount of event monitoring needed in their environment.

An overview of the tasks performed by an operator is provided, with details on how events are received and processed. The remainder of the book focuses on the types of events that can be received, how they are detected, how operators receive event notifications, and how problems can be investigated and recovery performed. The goal is to introduce the necessary tools, but not to show how every possible problem can be solved.

This book provides numerous descriptions of how fault management tools and products can be used to solve a variety of problems. Many of the chapters are focused on specific computer components, such as disks or databases, to be helpful to operators with specific roles. Here is a description of the individual chapters:

Chapter 1, “Analyzing the Role of System Operators,” describes the tasks performed by a system operator and the evolution of fault management.
Chapter 2, “Enumerating Possible Events,” describes the various types of events that are interesting to monitor on a UNIX system.
Chapter 3, “Using Monitoring Frameworks,” describes monitoring frameworks and the administrative tasks that must be done before they can be used.
Chapter 4, “Monitoring the System,” describes the tools and products used to monitor the UNIX server.
Chapter 5, “Monitoring the Disks,” describes the tools and products used to monitor external disk devices.
Chapter 6, “Monitoring the Network,” provides an overview of the many tools available for detecting problems and events related to the use of the network.
Chapter 7, “Monitoring the Application,” describes methods for monitoring the response times and availability of critical applications.
Chapter 8, “Monitoring the Database,” focuses specifically on tools to detect problems and events related to database usage.
Chapter 9, “Enterprise Management,” discusses the problems with trying to deal with fault management for the large-scale customer enterprise.
Chapter 10, “UNIX Futures,” discusses the future plans of some of the major UNIX system vendors in the area of fault management.
Appendix A, “Standards,” describes fault management standards that have emerged and how you can benefit from them.

The Glossary contains the important terms used in the book, and their definitions.
Although it is assumed that most customers concerned about fault management will implement high availability solutions, this book does not describe how to create highly available computing environments. Readers needing additional information on high availability may check Hewlett-PackardÕs external Web site on high availability (hp/go/ha) or read Clusters for High Availability by Peter Weygant.

In general, this book does not discuss the configuration and installation of the hardware and software components of your UNIX system. You should rely on your vendorsÕ product manuals for this.

Many of the examples used in this book were created on HP-UX servers. Other UNIX platforms behave similarly, and we note when tools are supported only on certain UNIX platforms.

Network Troubleshooting Tools

ImageShack

Book description
Network Troubleshooting Tools helps you sort through the thousands of tools that have been developed for debugging TCP/IP networks and choose the ones that are best for your needs. It also shows you how to approach network troubleshooting using these tools, how to document your network so you know how it behaves under normal conditions, and how to think about problems when they arise so you can solve them more effectively.

Over the years, thousands of tools have been developed for debugging TCP/IP networks. They range from very specialized tools that do one particular task, to generalized suites that do just about everything except replace bad Ethernet cables. Even better, many of them are absolutely free. There’s only one problem: who has time to track them all down, sort through them for the best ones for a particular purpose, or figure out how to use them? Network Troubleshooting Tools does the work for you–by describing the best of the freely available tools for debugging and troubleshooting. You can start with a lesser-known version of ping that diagnoses connectivity problems, or take on a much more comprehensive program like MRTG for graphing traffic through network interfaces. There’s tkined for mapping and automatically monitoring networks, and Ethereal for capturing packets and debugging low-level problems. This book isn’t just about the tools available for troubleshooting common network problems. It also outlines a systematic approach to network troubleshooting: how to document your network so you know how it behaves under normal conditions, and how to think about problems when they arise, so you can solve them more effectively. The topics covered in this book include:

* Understanding your network
* Connectivity testing
* Evaluating the path between two network nodes
* Tools for capturing packets
* Tools for network discovery and mapping
* Tools for working with SNMP
* Performance monitoring
* Testing application layer protocols
* Software sources

If you’re involved with network operations, this book will save you time, money, and needless experimentation.

Description
The purpose of this book is to bridge the gap between wireless networking and service research communities who have hitherto confined their work to their respective specialties. It not only focuses on the latest technology enablers for speedier and more reliable wireless networking in the home, but also integrates these enablers to provide workable end-to-end solutions from a user’s perspective. The scope is limited to approaches that will enhance the user’s experience in consuming content in the private and secure setting of the home.

From the Back Cover
A broad overview of the home networking field, ranging from wireless technologies to practical applications
In the future, it is expected that private networks (e.g., home networks) will become part of the global network ecosystem, participating in sharing their own content, running IP-based services, and possibly becoming service providers themselves. This is already happening in the so-called “social networks” and peer-to-peer file sharing networks on the Internet—making this emerging topic one of the most active research areas in the wireless communications field.
This book bridges the gap between wireless networking and service research communities, which, until now, have confined their work to their respective fields. Here, a number of industry professionals and academic experts have contributed chapters on various aspects of the subject to present an overview of home networking technologies with a special emphasis on the user as the center of all activities. Coverage includes:
*Networked home use cases and scenarios
*Media format, media exchange, and media interoperability
*Location-aware device and service discovery
*Security in smart homes
*Secure service discovery protocol implementation for wireless ad-hoc networks
*Multimedia content protection in consumer networks
*Mobile device connectivity in home networks
*Unlicensed mobile access/generic access network
*Wireless sensor networks in the home
*Ultra-wideband and sensor networking in the home environment
With a balanced mix of practice and theory, Technologies for Home Networking focuses on the latest technologies for speedier, more reliable wireless networking and explains how to facilitate workable end-to-end solutions from a user’s perspective. This book is an ideal resource for practicing engineers, designers, and managers with an interest in home networking and also serves as a valuable text for graduate students.

Emerging Web Services Technology

ImageShack

This book contains initial results of innovative and sometimes controversial emerging Web services research ideas. It covers a wide spectrum of active research areas like Model Driven Engineering for SOA, Mobility and Services, Dynamic Web Service Discovery and Composition, Service Management, and Semantic Web, just to name a few.

As Web services technology is becoming widely established in enterprise computing applications, Web service research is a very important and still very productive research domain. This book gives a timely report on the leading edge of this work by collecting selected and revised papers originally presented at the Workshop on Emerging Web Service Technology (WEWST) held in conjunction with the 4th European Conference on Web Services (ECOWS’06) last December 2006 in Zurich, Switzerland.

Acting as the natural extension to the main ECOWS conference, the main goal of the WEWST workshop is serving as a forum for providing early exposure and much needed feedback to grow and establish original and emerging research ideas within the Web Services community. The wide variety of tools, techniques and technological solutions presented in WEWST share one common feature: they advance the current Web Services research in new directions by introducing new and sometimes controversial ideas into the field.

Algorithms in Java, Part 5: Graph Algorithms

ImageShack

Once again, Robert Sedgewick provides a current and comprehensive introduction to important algorithms. The focus this time is on graph algorithms, which are increasingly critical for a wide range of applications, such as network connectivity, circuit design, scheduling, transaction processing, and resource allocation. In this book, Sedgewick offers the same successful blend of theory and practice that has made his work popular with programmers for many years.

Michael Schidlowsky and Sedgewick have developed concise new Java implementations that both express the methods in a natural and direct manner and also can be used in real applications.

Algorithms in Java, Third Edition, Part 5: Graph Algorithms is the second book in Sedgewick’s thoroughly revised and rewritten series. The first book, Parts 1-4, addresses fundamental algorithms, data structures, sorting, and searching. A forthcoming third book will focus on strings, geometry, and a range of advanced algorithms. Each book’s expanded coverage features new algorithms and implementations, enhanced descriptions and diagrams, and a wealth of new exercises for polishing skills. The natural match between Java classes and abstract data type (ADT) implementations makes the code more broadly useful and relevant for the modern object-oriented programming environment.

The Web site for this book (www.cs.princeton.edu/~rs/) provides additional source code for programmers along with a variety of academic support materials for educators.

Coverage includes:
# A complete overview of graph properties and types
# Diagraphs and DAGs
# Minimum spanning trees
# Shortest paths
# Network flows

The Invisible Web: Uncovering Information Sources Search Engines Can’t see

ImageShack

Enormous expanses of the Internet are unreachable with standard Web search engines. This book provides the key to finding these hidden resources by identifying how to uncover and use invisible Web resources. Mapping the invisible Web, when and how to use it, assessing the validity of the information, and the future of Web searching are topics covered in detail. Only 16 percent of Net-based information can be located using a general search engine. The other 84 percent is what is referred to as the invisible Web-made up of information stored in databases. Unlike pages on the visible Web, information in databases is generally inaccessible to the software spiders and crawlers that compile search engine indexes. As Web technology improves, more and more information is being stored in databases that feed into dynamically generated Web pages. The tips provided in this resource will ensure that those databases are exposed and Net-based research will be conducted in the most thorough and effective manner.

Code Leader: Using People, Tools, and Processes to Build Successful Software
“Patrick is a pragmatist with a purist’s knowledge. He has a deep understanding of what ’smells’ right, and he knows when and how to find the right balance to get the job done. This philosophy of balanced ‘pure pragmatism’ pervades this book and makes it useful.”

—from the foreword by Scott Hanselman, Author of ComputerZen Blog, www.computerzen.com; Senior Program Manager, Developer Division, Microsoft Corporation
Writing code is rewarding, but writing high-quality code, on time and at the lowest possible cost, is what makes a software project successful. As the role of a professional developer has evolved and taken on additional responsibilities, it is now necessary to work in concert with a team in order to improve both the process and final results of a software project. This unique book introduces a set of concrete best practices and construction techniques that can be applied to the development process and to actual code construction, so that you can confidently solve business problems rather than deal solely with pure coding tasks.
Patrick Cauldwell understands that it is no longer sufficient to just write software that solves a problem; it must also be fast, scalable, reliable, and easy to use. In this reference, he explains how to build software that is of high quality at a lower cost and shares with you the practical steps you must take in order to transition from software engineer to technical lead.

Securing & Optimizing Linux: A Hands on Guide for Linux Professionals

ImageShack

As an NT Administrator I have read many Linux books trying to bridge my NT knowledge to the Linux and Unix world, this book is by far the best.

Most of the Linux books I have read before tell you what to do to administer a Linux server, but they assume that you know how to do it. Gerhard Mourani tells you in detail what to do, how to do it, and why to do it. I have learned a great deal not only about Linux server applications, but about the Linux operating system itself.

If you want to take advantage of Linux’s versatility as a server operating system, and do it in the most secure and efficient manner, you can find no better book than this one. In addition to operating system configuration there are many chapters individually dedicated to installing and configuring specific Linux server applications such as Sendmail, SQL server, Apache, BIND, and many more.

One disclaimer: If you are looking for information on how to build a Linux workstation or cool Gnome desktop, this is not the book for you. It is focus is exclusively building Linux application servers.

Beowulf Cluster Computing with Linux, 2nd Edition (Scientific and Engineering Computation)

ImageShack

Product Description
Use of Beowulf clusters (collections of off-the-shelf commodity computers programmed to act in concert, resulting in supercomputer performance at a fraction of the cost) has spread far and wide in the computational science community. Many application groups are assembling and operating their own “private supercomputers” rather than relying on centralized computing centers. Such clusters are used in climate modeling, computational biology, astrophysics, and materials science, as well as non-traditional areas such as financial modeling and entertainment. Much of this new popularity can be attributed to the growth of the open-source movement.

The second edition of Beowulf Cluster Computing with Linux has been completely updated; all three stand-alone sections have important new material. The introductory material in the first part now includes a new chapter giving an overview of the book and background on cluster-specific issues, including why and how to choose a cluster, as well as new chapters on cluster initialization systems (including ROCKS and OSCAR) and on network setup and tuning. The information on parallel programming in the second part now includes chapters on basic parallel programming and available libraries and programs for clusters. The third and largest part of the book, which describes software infrastructure and tools for managing cluster resources, has new material on cluster management and on the Scyld system.

The Cambridge Companion to the Quran

Product Description
As the living scriptural heritage of more than a billion people, the Qur’an (Koran) speaks with a powerful voice. Just as other scriptural religions, Islam has produced a long tradition of interpretation for its holy book. Nevertheless, efforts to introduce the Qur’an and its intellectual heritage to English-speaking audiences have been hampered by the lack of available resources. The Cambridge Companion to the Qur’an seeks to remedy that situation. In a discerning summation of the field, Jane McAuliffe brings together an international team of scholars to explain its complexities. Comprising fourteen chapters, each devoted to a topic of central importance, the book is rich in historical, linguistic and literary detail, while also reflecting the influence of other disciplines. For both the university student and the general reader, The Cambridge Companion to the Qur’an provides a fascinating entrée to a text that has shaped the lives of millions for centuries.

Cisco Cookbook

ImageShack

Book Description
Everybody who has worked with Cisco routers for any length of time has had to ask their friends and co-workers for example router configuration files that show how to solve a common problem. A good working configuration example can often save huge amounts of time and frustration when implementing a feature that you’ve never used before. The Cisco Cookbook gathers hundreds of example router configurations all in one place. As the name suggests, Cisco Cookbook is organized as a series of recipes. Each recipe begins with a problem statement that describes a common situation that you might face.

After each problem statement is a brief solution that shows a sample router configuration or script that you can use to resolve this particular problem. A discussion section then describes the solution, how it works, and when you should or should not use it. The chapters are organized by the feature or protocol discussed. If you are looking for information on a particular feature such as NAT, NTP or SNMP, you can turn to that chapter and find a variety of related recipes. Most chapters list basic problems first, and any unusual or complicated situations last. The Cisco Cookbook will quickly become your “go to” resource for researching and solving complex router configuration issues, saving you time and making your network more efficient.

Hacking Exposed 5th Edition

ImageShack

A lot of computer-security textbooks approach the subject from a defensive point of view. “Do this, and probably you’ll survive a particular kind of attack,” they say. In refreshing contrast, Hacking Exposed, Second Edition talks about security from an offensive angle. A Jane’s-like catalog of the weaponry that black-hat hackers use is laid out in full. Readers see what programs are out there, get a rundown on what the programs can do, and benefit from detailed explanations of concepts (such as wardialing and rootkits) that most system administrators kind of understand, but perhaps not in detail. The book also walks through how to use the more powerful and popular hacker software, including L0phtCrack. This new edition has been updated extensively, largely with the results of “honeypot” exercises (in which attacks on sacrificial machines are monitored) and Windows 2000 public security trials. There’s a lot of new stuff on e-mail worms, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and attacks that involve routing protocols.

The result of all of this familiarity with bad-guy tools is a leg up on defending against them. Hacking Exposed wastes no time in explaining how to implement the countermeasures–where they exist–that will render known attacks ineffective. Taking on the major network operating systems and network devices one at a time, the authors tell you exactly what Unix configuration files to alter, what Windows NT Registry keys to change, and what settings to make in NetWare. They spare no criticism of products with which they aren’t impressed, and don’t hesitate to point out inherent, uncorrectable security weaknesses where they find them. This book is no mere rehashing of generally accepted security practices. It and its companion Web site are the best way for all of you network administrators to know thine enemies.
Topics covered:
*Security vulnerabilities of operating systems, applications, and network devices
*Administrative procedures that will help defeat them
*Techniques for hacking Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Novell NetWare, and Unix
*Strategies for breaking into (or bringing down) telephony devices, routers, and firewalls

Extra Ordinary Animals

Image
Th e earth, from a purely celestial point of view, is unremarkable. It is a small planet in a solar
system orbiting a medium-sized star in a smallish galaxy, the Milky Way, which contains billions
of solar systems. Th e Milky Way is but one of billions upon billions of galaxies in the incomprehensible
vastness of the universe. Yet, in one respect, the earth is special beyond compare. It is the
only place we know of on which there is life.
Life is such a small, seemingly insignifi cant word, yet it encompasses a fantastic diversity of
living forms. Th e exact time and nature of life’s appearance on the earth has divided scientists for
decades, and it will continue to do so because the time spans with which we are dealing are huge,
almost impossible for us to grasp, and the evidence is fragmentary and hard to come by.
What we do know is that the earth is very, very old—4.6 billion years old to be exact—but
for the vast majority of this time, it was a lifeless globe cooling from the fi res of its creation,
circling the sun in the young solar system, while being heavily bombarded by asteroids. Over
hundreds of millions of years, the earth changed and the asteroid impacts became less frequent.
Oceans formed and our planet became slightly more hospitable, but conditions on this primordial
Earth were still very diff erent from the comparatively balmy conditions we enjoy today. And
then, more than 3 billion years ago, the fi rst life evolved. Where and how are questions we can
only make good educated guesses at, but an experiment conducted in the 1950s by scientists in
the United States showed that lightning bolts discharged through an atmosphere, the likes of
which could have shrouded the young Earth, could have produced biological molecules—the
precursors of the fi rst simple cells. Although these experiments have since been called into question,
as more recent fi ndings suggest that the mix of gases used by the scientists to mimic the
atmosphere of the young earth was probably inaccurate, they do give us an idea of what may
have happened all those millions of years ago. Th e complexity of these fi rst biological molecules
increased over the eons, eventually forming the fi rst self-contained biological systems, which in
turn gave rise to the fi rst proper cells—the fi rst life.

Beginning SQL Queries From Novice to Professional

Image

As a query language, SQL is really quite small and should be easy to learn. A few basic
ideas and a handful of keywords allow you to tackle a huge range of queries. However,
many users often find themselves completely stumped when faced with a particular problem.
You may find yourself in that group. It isn’t really a great deal of help for someone to say,
“This is how I would do it.” What you need is a variety of ways to get started on a tricky
problem. Once you have made a start on a query, you need to be able to check, amend,
and refine your solution until you have what you need.

Mastering Algorithms with Perl

ImageShack

Product Description
Many programmers would love to use Perl for projects that involve heavy lifting, but miss the many traditional algorithms that textbooks teach for other languages. Computer scientists have identified many techniques that a wide range of programs need, such as:

* Fuzzy pattern matching for text (identify misspellings!)
* Finding correlations in data
* Game-playing algorithms
* Predicting phenomena such as Web traffic
* Polynomial and spline fitting

Using algorithms explained in this book, you too can carry out traditional programming tasks in a high-powered, efficient, easy-to-maintain manner with Perl. This book assumes a basic understanding of Perl syntax and functions, but not necessarily any background in computer science. The authors explain in a readable fashion the reasons for using various classic programming techniques, the kind of applications that use them, and — most important — how to code these algorithms in Perl. If you are an amateur programmer, this book will fill you in on the essential algorithms you need to solve problems like an expert. If you have already learned algorithms in other languages, you will be surprised at how much different (and often easier) it is to implement them in Perl. And yes, the book even has the obligatory fractal display program. There have been dozens of books on programming algorithms, some of them excellent, but never before has there been one that uses Perl. The authors include the editor of The Perl Journal and master librarian of CPAN; all are contributors to CPAN and have archived much of the code in this book there. “This book was so exciting I lost sleep reading it.” Tom Christiansen

About the Author
Jarkko Hietaniemi is the creator and Master Librarian of CPAN: Comprehensive Perl Archive Network. He has also been known to frequent Perl developer forums. Luckily enough, getting his MSc in CS in the field of parallel computing didn’t interfere overly much with his Perl and UNIX hacking. During those savored moments of off-line time, he fancies gobbling up speculative fiction and popular science. His real life employer is Nokia Research Center.

PHP and MySQL Web Development

ImageShack

Amazon.com
The PHP server-side scripting language and the MySQL database management system (DBMS) make a potent pair. Both are open-source products–free of charge for most purposes–remarkably strong, and capable of handling all but the most enormous transaction loads. Both are supported by large, skilled, and enthusiastic communities of architects, programmers, and designers. PHP and MySQL Web Development introduces readers (who are assumed to have little or no experience with the title subjects) to PHP and MySQL for the purpose of creating dynamic Internet sites. It teaches the same skills as introductory Active Server Pages (ASP) and ColdFusion books–technologies that address the same niche.

Authors Luke Welling and Laura Thomson’s technique aims to get readers going on their own projects as soon as possible. They present easily digestible sections on specific technical processes–”Accessing array contents” and “Using encryption with PHP” are two examples. Each section centers on a sample program that strips the task at hand down to its essentials, enabling the reader to fit the process into his or her own solutions as required. Tables that list options and other nuggets of reference material appear as well, but the many examples and the authors’ commentary on them take center stage.

For reference material on MySQL, have a look at Paul DuBois’s MySQL. On the PHP side, Web Application Development with PHP 4.0 is excellent. –David Wall

Topics covered:

* The MySQL database server (for both Unix and Windows)
* Accessing MySQL databases through PHP scripting (the letters don’t really stand for anything)
* Database creation and modification
* PHP tricks in order of increasing complexity–everything from basic SQL queries to secure transactions for commerce
* Authentication
* Network connectivity
* Session management
* Content customization

About the Author

Ewald Geschwinde was born on June 21, 1976 in Vienna, Austria. After primary school, he attended the high school for economics in Oberpullendorf. During this time he dealt with computers and extended the work in his favorite field while studying at the Technical University in Vienna. A few months later he started working at the computer center of CA (an Austrian bank), where he was responsible for writing data converters and network solutions for backup systems. In February 1999 he joined Synthesis, where he focused on scientifically monitoring the development of unemployment in Austria and generating reports using C, EFEU, LaTeX, and Perl. In his spare time he developed a database solution for business consultants. After focusing on Oracle databases, he left Synthesis to found Cybertec Geschwinde & Schvnig OEG—a company providing commercial support, training courses, tuning, and remote administration for PostgreSQL (www.postgresql.at) as well as LDAP (www.openldap.info).

On August 9, 1978 Hans-Jrgen Schvnig was born in Knittelfeld, a small town 125 miles southwest of Vienna. After primary school he attended a private school in Seckau. After the high school final exam, he started studying “Economics of Information” at the Technical University and the University of Vienna where he met Ewald Geschwinde. Just for fun, Hans started working on various projects and was finally employed at Synthesis (an Austrian research company focusing on forecasting the Austrian labor market), in September 1998. There he was responsible for the scientific analysis of data provided by the Austrian social security insurance (dozens of millions of records). During his time at Synthesis, he worked with Unix systems and automated text production, using EFEU, LaTeX, and Perl. In addition, he taught Unix classes in an adult education program once a week.

In the summer of 2000 Hans and Ewald left Synthesis to found Cybertec Geschwinde & Schvnig OEG (www.cybertec.at), focused entirely on PostgreSQL, LDAP, and Unix databases.

Solaris 9 Network Administrator Exam Cram 2 (Exam CX-310-044)

Image

#ISBN: 0782128491
#Author: Ann Navarro
#Publisher: Sybex Inc
#Publication Date: 2001-04

This is a nuts and bolts coding book. In it are examples showing how to hand-code, in XHTML, sites that include images, links, tables, frames, style sheets–just about everything you might want. There’s also extensive advice on planning your site design, knowing your audience, and doing e-business.
The author’s fundamental approach to effective Web design is what she terms the “cross-compatibility concept,” which is based upon two principles: creating valid code in the first place and creating code that will cause an older browser to either pass on content it can’t handle or offer “graceful degradation.” This runs counter to similar books, which advise serving up different content depending upon the user’s browser.

The book is aimed at those who have used Web layout applications like GoLive, Dreamweaver, or FrontPage, but now wish to know more about the underlying code; s well as those who may already know HTML but would like to learn proper XHTML, especially as a step toward learning XML. The author served on the W3C HTML Working Group as an invited expert, and her confident knowledge in this area is evident in her writing.

Her Web consulting company is called WebGeek, which isn’t surprising since the tone of this book is distinctively “geeky.” But anyone looking to sharpen his or her coding skills shouldn’t be deterred by that.

Beginners will find the book rigorous, but Webmasters will appreciate the chapter on code validators and how to interpret error reports, and the one on improving a site’s accessibility for the disabled.

Although it’s less effective in dealing with basic design issues like balance and visual unity (it gets marks for effort) or in the homemade (decidedly non-slick) look of sample site designs and graphics, this book does deliver when it comes to the exacting details of XHTML. The index is as thorough as that of a science textbook, and the appendices provide quick access to the XHTML abstract module definitions and all the elements and their attributes. The CD-ROM contains code referred to in the book, along with a lot of shareware and trial copies of Web utilities for FTP, code validating, browsers, and other useful applications.
